A brief tour of St Mary’s Cathedral
Entering by the West Door the visitor is confronted with the full beauty of the Cathedral, which was built by Mr. H Berryman in hard local whinstone to the designs of Mr. F L H Fleming and Sir Herbert Baker. The foundation stone (to be seen in the East outside wall in Wanderers St) was laid on May 13, 1926 (Ascension Day), and the completed Cathedral was consecrated at Michaelmas 1929. In 1982, through the initiative of Dean Simeon Nkoane CR, the Cathedral was restored under the direction of Mrs. Erica Mitchell and Mr Leonard Fleming.
Above the chancel steps and dominating the whole church is the famous hanging rood, an almost life-size wood-carving of the Crucifixion. Made in timber, designed and constructed by Mr. Baden-Beadle (in England), and hung in 1957 as a memorial to The Very Revd. William Palmer, Dean 1924-51.
